Before we move on to discuss inverter battery in some detail, it needs must be understood first the function of inverter and inverter battery respectively.

As it is, inverter is essentially a device that converts electricity from AC to DC and from DC to AC. The function of a battery is essentially to store energy to be used when the supply from the mains is not available.


Types of Batteries

There are many different types of battery available in the market. These include:

Let’s briefly discuss each of these battery types.

Lead acid battery

This type of battery consists of the protective body containing varying number of cells divided with cell divider and electrolyte. The cell divider has a very important role to play in a battery; because it not only keeps apart anode and cathode, it also facilitates the movement of ionic charge that finishes the circuit during the time that the current flows.

Many different materials are used in making the outer protective body of a battery. These may include glass, bituminous rubber, ceramic, polymer or wood that is lined with lead. Different manufacturers use different materials for reasons that they know better.

As for the cells, each of them consists of anode and cathode, of which anode (bearing positive charge) is made from lead dioxide (PbO2) whereas cathode (bearing negative charge) is made from lead (Pb). However, the latter may also contain antimony or tin or calcium in small proportion.

Both the anode and cathode are placed in electrolyte that consists of sulfuric acid (H2SO4). The electrolyte is a medium used for conducting electric charge in the form of ions. When the battery is put to use, chemical reaction takes place inside it, making positive ions move from anode to cathode, and negative ions move from cathode to anode. So, anode acquires negative charge and cathode acquires positive charge. What happens next is that the negative charge at anode attracts positive ions and positive charge at cathode attracts negative ions toward cathode.

The whole process gets reversed when you charge the battery. While charging, negative ions move back from anode to cathode and positive ions from cathode to anode.

As it is, due to such chemical reaction inside the battery, electrons are freed at anode, producing current.

Coming to the advantages of the usage of this type of battery, it is quite light. It is extremely efficient in generating electricity and is also rechargeable. Also, it is quite cheap.

But the downside of this battery is that it requires maintenance. By maintenance we mean water topping, venting the harmful gases generated due to chemical reactions that take place due to charging and discharging, and checking the electrolyte concentration.

Please note that the release of the gases generated in lead-acid batteries into atmosphere does not make them eco-friendly. In this matter, tubular batteries are a better option.

Finally, you cannot use it for running heavy appliances.

Tubular battery

This is considered to be the most efficient type. It lasts longer and, therefore, proves extremely useful in supplying constant source of backup power at times when the supply from the mains does not resume in a short time. Also, it doesn’t require much maintenance due to their robust design.

Now, let’s talk about how it differs from the flat plate battery. In the latter we see electrodes in the form of plates whereas in the former the electrodes have tubular shape. Naturally, tubular electrodes have bigger dimension than that of flat plate. These electrodes are secured in porous gauntlets. Between the electrodes and the gauntlets, there is positive active mass (PAM). On top of the tubular electrodes, we have the connector bus and at bottom the bottom bar.

Please note that these tubular electrodes work as anode. For cathode, we have plate type electrodes. Just like in lead-acid battery, in tubular also acid is used as an electrolyte. The chemical reaction within the battery remains the same as that in flat plate battery. However, as already stated earlier, the tubular battery lasts longer than a normal battery and requires less maintenance. It is good for running heavy appliances but is quite costly.

Sealed Maintenance Free Battery (SMF)

It is sealed! Simple! It means you are free from the bother of topping water at regular intervals. All the parts are covered…The parts include positive and negative plates, separator, partition between each of the cells, through the partition inter-cell connectors and electrolyte. All you see outside are the positive and the negative terminals, and the vent cover. This type also lasts longer because the electrolyte and electrodes last very long.

The other advantages held out by this type of battery are their fast charging time and emission-free operation that renders it absolutely eco-friendly. But, it is quite costly.

C rating of a battery indicates the amount of energy that is needed for charging it. By the same measure it gets discharged. If you see 1C, it means 1.3 hour discharge. And if you see 20C, it means 26-hour discharge when the battery is fully charged. In short, this rating shows the capacity of a battery to last. Therefore, it is good to take note of the C rating of any battery that you come across.


Self-discharge Rate
